Villasimius, on the seaside between history and traditions

Villasimius, Timi Ama

One of the most beautiful corners of the southern coast of Sardinia crosses Villasimius, a town among the top destinations for travelers and tourists, as well as much loved by locals. The magic begins from the distance, while approaching what looks like a real colorful paint made up of clear, tropical sea surrounded by a wild, explosive, Mediterranean scrub. Once there, you will probably remind of the short story you are about to read...

An ancient fortress dating back to 1300 and today become a museum of archeology; a pond that turns pinky according to the fleece of its more usual visitors, the pink flamingos (Stagno di Nottieri); a granitic tower looking at the horizon (Torre di Porto Giunco); two small islands whose rich environment is protected by special laws (Isola dei Cavoli e Serpentara); and a cave where granite was extracted for over a hundred years until 1950 (Cava Usai). This doesn't exhaust the countless beauties covering the region, that is however more widely renown for its spectacular seaside.

In particular, it is worth a swim in the Simius beach, quite close to the centre of Villasimius. Also, it is a must-visit place the beach of Timi Ama: long and sandy with transparent water, this little paradise is often chosen as an ideal location for advertising sets by video-makers and photographers. The seaside is interrupted by smaller bays literally “brighting”: this is due to tiny grains of quartz crystals adorning the coast.

Not least, traditions play a very significant role in the history and culture of this region. One of the most suggestive and original events in town is the festival called “la sagra della Madonna del Naufrago” - that would translate into the festival of the “Virgin Mary's shipwreck” - since it is held to celebrates all those who died in the sea, while wishing good luck to fishermen and “men sea”. The ritual, taking place on the third sunday of every July, consists of the coronation of a Virgin Mary sculpture (handcrafted by a famous contemporary artist from Sardinia, Pinuccio Sciola), under the water. Then you can take part in the September's Santa Maria Festival, more like a lively carnival in music, or the Festival of San Raffaele, in late-October, with a great show of fireworks. Which one you choose?
