Postcard from La Sartiglia

Sartiglia

To See: The so-called "Corsa alla Stella", literally "The ride toward the Star", is one of the most suggestive and spectacular happenings during the Carnival in Sardinia. Its leading player is the androgin mask of "Su Componidori", whose sword has to fit and catch a little silver star along his way, while riding his/her horse at full gallop. Only skilled and successful riders will be prized with it.

To Hear: The profound sound produced by drummers and trumpeters at the opening of the procession, whose solemn, cadenced rhythm has been preserved throughout centuries.

To Smell: The pungent, overwhelming smell of "Vernaccia", the ancient white wine, slightly sweet, whose production takes place in the town of Oristano and its surroundings.

To Taste: Mostaccioli biscuits, typical homemade sweets with regional flavours prepared with natural ingredients, are ideal to taste with the above-mentioned Vernaccia.

To Touch: The traditional clothes of the Componidori, whose dressing rituals are supervised by the figure of 'Sa Massaia Manna', literally the expert housewife.
